The Golden Treasury of Puritan Quotations does not belong to the ordinary run of anthologies but is a masterful selection by an author who has given many years to his work. The 1500 quotations from a wide range of Puritans have been chosen with great care, and arranged under topical headings. They form an ideal introduction to the writings of the great and godly men of the 17th century, and will prove to be devotional reading of the highest quality. Those who are already familiar with the Puritan writings will find the ‘Treasury‘ to be a perfect stimulus to further reading.
About the Author
Dr. I. D. E. (Isaac David Ellis) Thomas was born in Carmarthenshire, Wales and held three pastorates in his native land – at Amman Valley, Caernarvon and Llanelli (Zion Baptist Chapel) – before spending ten years conducting preaching missions in Europe, the U.S.A. and Canada. He also served as a commentator for the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation).
He was the Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Maywood, California for over thirty years, and then Pastor Emeritus of United Community Church in Glendale, CA. He passed away on August 28, 2013. He was the author of several books, including A Puritan Golden Treasury, published by the Trust in its Puritan Paperbacks series.
This is an excellent work of a collection of quotes from the Puritan preachers of hundreds of years ago. The quotes are arranged alphabetically by subject category. Some quotes are long, some are short, but all have stood the test of time. It took me years to find a copy of this book, as it has been out-of-print for decades.
While I would not describe this book of quotes as entertaining in the usual sense, it is most certainly enlightening and thought provoking. If you like quotes which will make you think and which will challenge you, this book should be in your library. - Poiema
