The Bible has always been a focus for the attacks of the enemies of Truth. Dean Burgon is renowned for his staunch defence of the biblical text, and the works he issued all bear the hallmarks of his scholarship.

In these sermons, a response to the emerging liberalism expressed in a book entitled Essays and Reviews, Burgon’s style is lively and straightforward. They are a clarion call to reject the new approach, which he identifies as cynical unbelief.

The same errors are being re-expressed today – even among professing evangelicals – and these sermons are therefore just as important now as when they were first delivered. More than ever, we need those who, like Burgon, are willing to affirm the unique nature of the Bible and its own self-consistent method for interpreting its message.
