HABAKKUK: THE TRIUMPH OF FAITH OVER FEAR
Habakkuk saw that Judean society was a moral mess. He was abhorred by the fact that God’s Old Covenant Theocratic people were behaving as though they knew nothing of God. He was perplexed… As this small Old Testament book begins, we hear Habakkuk praying. He is asking two of the most difficult questions known to man: How long?, and Why? - Have you ever asked the Lord these two questions? “Why is this happening?” “How long is this going to go on?”
Habakkuk lays out his concerns in powerful poetic petition. As he surveys Judean society he is accosted by societal violence, iniquity, wickedness, destruction, strife, and contention. Lord, do You not see it? Why are You allowing this? When are You doing to do something about this? Are You not good? Are You not powerful? Are You not the God of Your people? Your name is at stake! Why is this evil happening? How long will it be until you rectify all this wickedness?” Approaching the Holy God of heaven with such questions is risky business. Is Habakkuk crossing the line and being disrespectfully demanding of the Lord? How will the Lord respond?
