About the Author
This is a reprint (not facsimile) of the 1622 edition. William Gouge (1575-1653) was born in Stratford-Bow Middlesex County, England. Educated in Paul's School, London, Felstad in Essex, and at Eton School. He graduated from King's College, Cambridge, followed by a brilliant teaching career there. Following his ordination at 32 years of age, he ministered at Blackfriars Church, London for 45 years. In addition to his great success as a pastor, his mid-week expository lectures at Blackfriars drew increasingly larger crowds. Spirituality and scholarship made his career at Cambridge, his pastoral work and his writings unique. He was renowned as "the father of the London Divines and the oracle of his time." In 1643 he was made a member of the Westminster Assembly of Divines by vote of Parliament. His primary works include his Commentary on Hebrews, The Whole Armour of God, and Of Domestical Duties.
We found this book years ago as a facimile. Actually we had a ministry and had many people typing it out so we could reprint it. We took out the hard to read Old English and translated it into more of a modern english, leaving the "thee's and thou's" to give it more of the respect that it deserves. My husband became ill and our ministry had to be shut down. The disc's of what we had were shared with other ministries. It was so good a few years back to see it being put into book form by LuLu.com. All the efforts off all those that originally typed it into their computers is now being enjoyed by others. I thank everyone that participated!! I love this book! The treatises were originally sermons preached by Rev. Gouge to his church. They asked him to put it into book form for them to have in their homes. It is a privledge for anyone to have this for their family! I would recommend it very highly!
