This little book was given to us by a dear Christian brother and sister who are currently suffering. They are still in the middle of the dark valley and already they are reaching out to others to encourage them to trust the Lord through the dark night of the soul.
Bonar writes like a 17th century English Puritan. His style is delightful and yet never trivial or clever. He bleeds Bible on every page and puts thick and serious doctrine into print with beautiful English. Bonar was a hymn writer and a contemporary of the likes of JC Ryle and CH Spurgeon so his style doesn't surprise me. But his doctrine does as I think he spent much time with Moody during his crusades around England. Bonar is solidly reformed though and every page of this wonderful book is grounded in sound and balanced understanding of the holy Scriptures.
This book will challenge you to view suffering as not just 'good' but as absolutely necessary and something to be embraced, instead of merely tolerated. You may just buy several copies after you've read this one, to give them to friends and family.
