About the Author
Biblical guidelines for growing to Christian maturity. It explains the pattern of God's work in the lives of his people and concludes with a brief spiritual check-up. Relevant to all stages of spiritual development, it provides a guide book that will be specially helpful to new Christians.
If something is alive it should be growing. This is true in the spiritual realm as well as the physical. How do I discern if I am maturing in the Christian faith? Sinclair Ferguson gives us an excellent summary on the basics of spiritual growth. If someone is growing spiritually they are becoming more mature, more rooted and grounded in the faith. Mr.Ferguson writes p.2"Christian maturity is Christ likeness." How do we measure our growth? The more we are conformed to the image of Christ is the surest way to measure Christian maturity.
How does a believer come to be more like his Lord and Savior? Where there is spiritual life there will be hunger to feed that which is living. There will be hunger for the 'bread of life'. Matthew 4:4 '...man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.' One must read, study, seek to understand and submit to the Word of the Lord,if one is to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. I had little to no exposure to the Word of God until I was in my mid 20's.There was an enormous change that took place when I intensely desired to know God's Word so that I might(by His grace)do His will.
The author then briefly looks at three essential elements for Christian growth:1.Worship-There is nothing that can replace wholehearted devotion and consecration to God.This is the heart of worship.Psalm 103:1 'Bless the Lord,O my soul;and all that is within me,bless his holy name.' This is a verbal expression of one that is wholly devoted to the Lord. There is no holding back in the Psalmists devotion to the Lord. All that I am and all that I have is yours Lord.According to Romans 12:1 Our whole life is to be offered up to the God that loves us and gave his son for us.2.Knowledge-If we are devoted to God then our desire will be to know and do his will.An intimate acquaintance with the Scriptures is necessary if we are to walk in God's ways.3.Witness and Service-Man's natural instinct(fallen man's that is)is towards self preservation but to grow spiritually we must be willing to lose our life for Christ's sake(just as he was willing to lose his life for our sake) p.10"we gain(and grow)in the Christian life by giving away our lives to Christ and to others."
There are a series of questions at the end of the booklet which will be very helpful in evaluating one's growth.I think this booklet was written primarily for relatively new believers but it is often helpful for those who have known the Lord for many years to have basic principles set before their mind and heart,in order to help them monitor their spiritual health.
