About the Author
Albert N. Martin concluded 46 years of ministry at Trinity Baptist Church in Montville, New Jersey, in June 2008. A recognised evangelist, counsellor, pastor and preacher, Al Martin had his first experience of street preaching before the age of eighteen, under the guidance of elders at the Mission Hall he attended.
Based on the words of Psalm 119:57-60, A Life of Principled Obedience expounds the essential elements of faithful Christian living. Bringing a life-time of pastoral experience to bear on this important subject, Albert N. Martin explains the foundation on which an obedient Christian life is built, the context in which it develops and the blessing to which it leads.
What is the heart of true godliness? Is obedience to God's precepts optional for a believer? What are some of the blessings attached to obedience? How do I break lifelong patterns of living by unBiblical principles(such as my feelings)? Pastor A.N.Martin gives strong Biblical answers to questions like these.
One of the clear marks of the people of God is that 'they keep the commandments of God,and the faith of Jesus'(Rev.14:12).They don't perfectly keep His commandments but purposefully. They strive to keep a conscience void of offense before God and their fellow man. They are determined to obey their Lord and walk according to His Word and this should be the pattern of their lives. They are not justified by their obedience, only Christ's perfect righteousness which is imputed to those who are trusting in Him can do that.If someone is truly trusting in Christ they will from the bottom of their heart desire to please Him and to submit to His Lordship.Christ Himself said 'If you love me keep my commandments'(John 14:15)and 'why call me ye Lord,Lord and do not the things I say?'. Pastor Martin is writing to those who desire to walk in principled obedience to their Lord and Saviour and the Lord Jesus expects and desires this from His people.
Some of the many reasons why this booklet is so helpful is because it clearly lays out the Biblical principles behind Pastor Martin's assertions and specific examples are given to flesh out those principles. An excellent example of this can be found on p.15 "It means, for example, that when you've prayed,'God help me to keep a pure mind',and a television program comes on that has scenes that are borderline pornography, you turn the program off:and it means if you don't have the Christian maturity and will to turn such programs off,you have to get rid of the T.V. in order to keep a good conscience before God." I think this is what it means to pluck out an eye or or cut off a hand if it offends. We must be willing to do what is necessary to effectively deal with sin and temptation.
This booklet offers sound Biblical reasoning to those who want to walk in wholehearted obedience to the Word of God.Pastor Martin's exortations are Biblical, powerful, convincing and uncompromising much like his preaching for any who have been privileged to sit under it.I believe his strong exortations come from a love for God's people and a desire to help those who want to honestly assess what their obedince looks like in the light of God's Word and see if it is the type of obedience that is characteristic of God's people in the Scriptures.
